Travel in summer

One of the delightful things about being an English teacher is that you can learn interesting facts and findings from your adult students about foreign countries unless you don't often go abroad. Usually, there are many students in a class who really like to travel abroad. This summer two of my students took a trip abroad, New Caledonia and Canada.

One of them visited her son who lives in Vancouver and goes to an English language school. She's not often been to foreign countries, so she was a bit nervous before going there. But she traveled there with her family and seems not to have experienced any difficulties or troubles, fortunately.

About the English language itself, she said that the most challenging part of the communication was to understand the conversation spoken by the locals who use English as a second language. It must have been her first time to listen to such an English with a very strong accent. I think it offered her a new perspective on using English. She's now more eager to learn and enjoy English for the next trip.
The other student has been to New Caledonia with her family. For my adult students, who are in their 50's and 60's, and I included, the country is like one of the dreamlands we want to visit because there is a famous book called "a place nearest to heaven." All of us read it when we were young.

The most surprising thing she said about New Caledonia is the prices of everyday goods and food.  She reported that you have to pay almost three times more than when you buy things in Japan. For example, to buy just a piece of pizza and a cup of coffee, you might have to pay way more than one thousand yen. That's expensive! After all, if you want to live in a heavenly place on earth and enjoy the peaceful life there, you've got to have some money...

Next month is the best season to travel and my private student is planning to visit Poland! I will be using this animated video of the history of the country, a funny report video, and learn more from the article linked below.
